Increasing numbers of people in developing countries are sliding into poverty because of economic and social conditions. The situation is often characterized by

• lack of competitiveness, 
• unemployment, 
• unstable financial systems, and 
• unsustainable use of natural resources.

The objective of economic development and employment promotion is to develop efficient economic, financial, and training systems in order to increase competitiveness and sustainable employment, particularly for disadvantaged segments of the population. This makes an important contribution to poverty reduction.
