The Bridging the Gap Initiative

Pathways for Transport in a Post-2012 Process

Transport is recognised as a key contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, compared to other climate-related issues like deforestation or energy, transport plays only a minor role under the current regime and in the negotiations of the post-Kyoto process. A clear, targeted strategy for integrating transport into the current climate change negotiations is needed.

Five organisations with strong international expertise in sustainable transport and climate change - GTZ, UK's Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), Veolia Transport, the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) and the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) - are working together to promote the role of transport in a post-2012 agreement and to facilitate the implementation of GHG mitigation measures in the transport sector of developing countries.
