Sustainable urban mobility

Bird's eye view on main artery road in Mexico City

„A city is more civilised not when it has highways, but when a child on a tricycle is able to move about everywhere with ease and safety.“ (Enrique Peñalosa)

An efficient transport system is one of the factors that make urban areas competitive and gives people access to jobs, education and health care. However, in most metropolitan areas people suffer from health problems triggered by exhaust fumes and noise. Traffic jams waste people’s time, which results in considerable financial losses for the economy and public administration.

GTZ thus sets out to plan activities that are designed to avoid and reduce traffic, transfer traffic to environmentally friendly systems, and devise environmentally sound transport systems. E.g. this might mean planning settlement structures that reduce traffic, promoting and developing public transport systems and introducing low-emission vehicle technologies.

With the support of internationally recognised experts, GTZ has compiled solutions for sustainable urban transport in a publication entitled “Sustainable Urban Transport: A Sourcebook for Policy-makers in Developing Cities”. Consultancy services include training measures, project-related expert assignments and the organisation of regional and international dialogues on the theme of urban mobility.
