Tackling Climate Change Through Transport
The transport sector is responsible for about one quarter of global carbon dioxide emissions and emissions from this sector are growing more rapidly than any other. In order to achieve significant reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions, transport must be de-carbonised. Only a (nearly) zero-carbon transport system can ensure emission reductions by 80 per cent in developed and 50 per cent in developing countries, as recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. To cut carbon dioxide emissions from transport, three major avenues exist: reducing the demand for travel, switching to low-carbon modes and improving energy efficiency of transport modes and vehicle technology. GIZ assists its partner countries in designing and implementing strategies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the transport sector. Here, the primary focus lies on improved public transportation systems, integration of transport systems in urban planning and the promotion of energy efficiency in the transport sector.
