Clean air in cities
More than 1.4 billion city dwellers daily breathe in alarmingly high levels of harmful substances, well above the limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO). This causes about three million premature deaths annually, especially among the poor.
GIZ can look back on more than 15 years of experience in dealing with air pollution. Our advisory services focus primarily on authorities, institutions and organisations at a local, regional and national level. Past successes have proven we are on the right track. Even under at times arduous prevalent conditions, it has been possible to achieve noticeable pollutant reductions, to reduce smog alarms and to foster a general public rethinking in the interests of sustainable urban development. In Mexico City, for example, the GIZ (former GTZ) has since 1991 played a significant role in drawing up Clean Air Plans and implementing various measures in the transport and industrial sectors. As a result, air pollutants have been reduced by two-thirds in this metropolis of 20 million inhabitants.
