Strategy on Energy and Climate Protection

In many developing countries the use of fossil fuels is one of the main causes of greenhouse gas emissions alongside deforestation. The decarbonisation of energy supplies, wherever technically possible and economically feasible, is essential if emissions are to be reduced in order to protect the climate. This means that we need to move away from fossil fuels and foster renewable energy sources. At the same time it is necessary to convert, distribute and use energy more efficiently, especially as resources become increasingly scarce and more expensive.

GIZ supports its partners in energy policy planning, from advisory services and mediation to training measures on climate-friendly solutions. Additionally, support is given to training at the energy ministries and related institutions on efficient, climate-oriented energy planning that takes into account the conservation of natural resources. The strategies and plans that emerge from this joint consultation process benefit the power utilities and end-users while simultaneously helping to protect the global climate and the local environment.
