Sustainable infrastructure

Mini hydro power plant in Indonesia

People frequently only realise the importance of infrastructure when it is lacking. Infrastructure makes possible economic takeoff, which in turn makes it an important foundation for better living conditions. Water, energy, transport and adequate housing are a source and driver of development.

Water is a food, an economic commodity and a factor of production. Access to this vital resource is a prerequisite for individual health, peaceful coexistence and productivity. Energy transforms this potential into production. Dynamic development needs energy which is ecologically sustainable and available where it is needed – in the private home as well as in agriculture, manufacturing industry and the service sector. An efficient transport system channels this dynamism, creating the backbone for a modern economy – it enables people to get to work, school or a healthcare institution, opens up rural areas and makes cities internationally competitive.

The growing demand for water, energy, mobility and forwardlooking construction, particularly in developing countries, is a challenge and an opportunity. GTZ assists its partners in harmonising economic growth, social development and resource conservation. Together with the local population, we find fitting solutions for developing, financing and managing an effective and efficient infrastructure. To improve living conditions. To reduce poverty. And to promote economic potential sustainably. In short – to lay the foundation for tomorrow – locally, regionally and globally.
