East Africa Regional Conference “Accelerating Water Supply and Sanitation for the Urban Poor”

- Pro-poor sector reform, using the domestic private sector, listening to customers -

East African governments have to scale up their water supply and sanitation (WSS) service coverage in order to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) by 2015. One of the big challenges is appropriate water service provision in poor urban areas, particularly the fast-growing peri-urban areas. This conference sent a clear message to policymakers and other key stakeholders: action on the ground needs to be initiated with urgency to improve the water and sanitation situation for the urban poor.
