HIV - a global restraint on development

Solidary Ribbon. © GTZ 2004.

AIDS continues to spread unabated more than 20 years after the disease first appeared. At the end of 2005 there were more than 40 million people living with HIV worldwide, the great majority of them in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. Partner countries strive to contain the spread and alleviate the impacts of HIV through measures that are deployed in all sectors of development.

Together with its partners GTZ supports HIV information and education in medical institutions, schools, in the workplace, and among risk groups. The partners are assisted in alleviating the repercussions of HIV in developing countries, enabling persons infected with HIV and their families to lead dignified lives, and enabling economic development despite the HIV epidemic. To this end GTZ supports national coordination while promoting more efficient deployment of international funds to combat HIV.
