Knowledge systems for rural areas

"Services can work when poor people stand at the center of service provision."

Shanta Devarajan, Director of the World Development Report 2004

Knowledge services for rural areas:

  • Extension
  • Qualification
  • Research
  • Information and communication technologies

Knowledge is key to economic, social and political development. Rural areas do not only require knowledge for agricultural production. They also need to know about markets, prices, standards, alternative sources of income, organisation, and political reforms. Rural areas are structurally disadvantaged in accessing knowledge. To empower them, they must be provided with knowledge efficiently.

The project bundles the experiences of German and international cooperation in research, extension, training and information services and makes the concepts and instruments available through publications, workshops and extension.
Managing rural service providers is a complex business. In development programmes in West and Central Africa we quickly identified all the factors needed for success and designed implementation strategies and described them in “Conceptual Framework for Rural Service. Reform Processes Anglophone/Francophone Africa”. These form the basis of the programme work and can serve to harmonise the approaches of various donors in other parts of the world.
