The Lao People’s Democratic Republic is a partner country of German development cooperation. Since 1993, GTZ has worked in Laos on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). During this time, GTZ has supported its Lao partners in conducting formal and non-formal vocational training, in training young forestry personnel, in developing health systems, in combating drug abuse and has provided consultancy on developing a market economy.

The Governments of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic have agreed to concentrate their development cooperation on the priority areas of sustainable economic development on the one hand, and environmental policy, conservation and sustainable use of natural resources on the other.

In order to use human and financial resources more efficiently, existing individual projects were amalgamated into two programmes:

  • a programme for development of human resources while establishing a market economy
  • a programme for integrated rural development of the country’s northern mountainous regions

Both programmes attempt to recruit as many national specialists as possible from the public and private sectors.
In addition, GTZ implements programmes for these international organisations:

  • Mekong River Commission (MRC)
  • EU
