Development partnerships in Maghreb and the Middle East
In the Middle East and Maghreb countries in North Africa, GIZ has carried out over 70 development partnerships since the programme was launched. These measures resulted in an inflow of over EUR 20 million to the region in public and private funds. The emphasis in promotion was on measures assisting sustainable development in the partner countries (41 per cent of projects, 32 per cent of funds). The second most important issue was environmental protection (30 per cent and 34 per cent respectively).
The following examples show just a small selection from the broad range of possible development partnerships.

Implementation of an ecologically and economically sustainable management system in the hotel industry
Quality and environmental consciousness is growing in the Egyptian hotel industry. In this project, a German consulting firm and a major Egyptian hotel operator, assisted by GIZ (former GTZ), developed a hotel management system which is ecofriendly and resource conserving. The model also forms the basis for establishing a country-wide training programme for hotel staff.

Achieving and maintaining international pharmaceutical standards
To be able to compete on the world market, Syrian pharmaceutical countries must meet international drug standards. GIZ (former GTZ) and BEGECA are assisting the companies in complying with the demanding international Top Norm PIC/S GMP. Low-cost and high-quality drugs from Syria also improve health care in many developing countries.

Together with GIZ (former GTZ), Henkel KGaA is assisting its suppliers in Algeria in introducing modern efficiency-enhancing management methods. The focus is on environmental protection and safety at work.

Quality management in date production
Cultivation, processing and marketing in date production are the focus of a development partnership between Vitaterra and GIZ (former GTZ) in Algeria. The partners are jointly establishing a quality and control system for better products that are easier to market, which also improves the potential income of small growers.
