Development partnerships in Asia
Around 30 per cent of GIZ (former GTZ) development partnerships projects initiated since 1999 have been carried out in Asia. This resulted in an inflow of over EUR 81 million to the region in public and private funds, up to the end of 2007. More than half of the projects were concerned with sustainable economic development. Other priority areas for projects were agriculture and environmental protection measures.
The following examples show just a small selection of the almost 250 joint projects in Asia.

A new star in the tea skies (Nepal)
Nepal has huge potential in the tea market. TeeGschwendner has recognised this fact and, together with GIZ, is supporting small farmers in producing organic tea of the highest possible quality which meets international certification criteria.

Asia: Methadone programme for drug users
A strategic alliance formed with CompWare, an ISO-certified manufacturer of medical devices, is intended to support the implementation and expansion of a high-quality methadone substitution programme for injecting opium addicts in Nepal, Malaysia and India.

Viet Nam: Sustainable coffee production
By growing sustainably produced coffee, small-scale farmers in Viet Nam are able to protect and increase their income. Fewer fertilisers and pesticides and less water are used, which protects the environment. The quality of life of small-scale farmers is improved due to better social infrastructure.

Viet Nam: Environment-friendly fish-farming
Producing certified organic pangasius protects the environment and boosts the income of small-scale fish farmers. Jobs in aquaculture are being protected. The organic fish is being marketed successfully in Europe.

Viet Nam: Modern technology for companies
Manufacturing industry in and around the Vietnamese capital, Ho Chi Minh City, is implementing modern control and regulation technology. Workers are being trained to use this technology, while students, tutors from vocational schools and lecturers are also gaining new skills. New markets are being created for German control and regulation technology.

Renewable Energy in Rural Areas – Entrepreneurship Promotion Programme for Solar Energy (Laos)
Solar energy systems are a reliable source of energy – as long as they are properly operated and serviced. With GIZ assistance, the Lao-German enterprise Sunlabob has established a countrywide franchise and service network offering solar energy units for rent to private households, micro-enterprises and communities.

Development of local qualification structures and dialogue-oriented qualification approaches in the basic consumer goods industry.
Together with GIZ (former GTZ), Tchibo is improving production and working conditions at Asian suppliers. The special feature of this project is that companies learn to establish structures within which management and workforce initiate changes in dialogue. Previously trained local training centres offer the necessary qualification and support.

Social security for the poor in India, Indonesia and Laos
Over a billion people live on less than USD 1 a day. Natural disasters, the illness or death of a breadwinner can be life-threatening blows. For them, insurance cover is particularly important – but mostly also beyond reach. Together with Allianz, GIZ is developing microinsurance products for these population groups.

Establishing a labelling programme for the energy efficiency of electronic household appliances
In cooperation with the Indian energy authority, Thyssen Krupp Electrical Steel and GIZ (former GTZ) have established a market-oriented labelling programme in India for the energy efficiency of household appliances. The obligation to label encourages manufacturers to make energy-saving appliances, and raises consumer awareness of the need for economy in using existing energy resources.

Establishing a distribution and trading system for agricultural products
Metro Cash & Carry and GIZ (former GTZ) are assisting the Vietnamese government in establishing a distribution and trading system for the agricultural sector which meets international quality requirements. The system helps avoid harvest losses, boost the yield from production, processing and distribution, and improve the competitiveness of Vietnamese agriculture.
