Partnerships between development cooperation and the private sector are gaining momentum throughout the world. The possible forms for cooperation are diverse: they range from individual projects to global initiatives such as the Global Compact, which is closely related to the principle of Public Private Partnerships.

The Global Compact is an initiative of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. At its core are 10 principles for human rights, labour standards, the environment and eliminating corruption. The Global Compact calls upon globally active companies to recognise these principles and to take steps to put them into effect.

The Global Compact also offers companies the possibility of getting together with other Compact participants to exchange ideas and information about successful projects. In dialogue with governmental and non-governmental representatives, partnerships are formed voluntarily, and practicable approaches developed.
