GTZ services: Policy advice on agriculture and rural development

What we offer

Agricultural trade policy
We provide advice on how to shape policies of relevance to agricultural trade, both within developing countries (e.g. agricultural sector reforms in Africa) and in relation to the EU (e.g. alignment with EU regulations and directives).

Regional rural development
We support partners in planning and implementing customised solutions for their regions and develop their capacity for solving problems independently.

Policy advice on food security
We advise and support national and international organisations in the fields of national food security strategies, the institutional framework, and implementation.

Land policy and land management
We support partner countries' land policies at national and regional level. This includes land laws and legal advice, land administration, land development and agricultural and land reforms.

Forests and sustainable development
We support our partners in developing and implementing socially balanced, economically viable and ecologically sustainable forest policies and legislation.

Implementation of international environmental regimes
We advise governments on implementing international environmental agreements, for example the conventions to combat desertification, conserve biological diversity and protect forests.

Environmental policy
We support national environmental policies and regional and local environmental management. This includes strengthening environmental departments, solving problems jointly, and establishing responsibility at decentralised level.

Fisheries policy
In this field we advise governmental and non-governmental organisations predominantly on developing fish management plans, monitoring protected areas, and developing a code of conduct for sustainable fisheries.

What you can achieve with us

Successful agricultural and resource policies safeguard people's livelihoods. They serve to achieve long-term development objectives such as reducing poverty, respecting basic human rights, preventing crises, and bringing about sustainable development. In a globalised world the successful participation of developing countries in international trade is becoming increasingly important. Trade in agricultural products represents their greatest potential. Creating fair trade opportunities for developing countries is one way to combat poverty.

We help to create the long-term conditions for economic development, social justice, ecological sustainability and thus of democratisation and peace by

  • improving access to resources
  • optimising food production and marketing
  • mainstreaming food orientation in the health and education systems
  • raising awareness of how eating habits can be improved.
