New GIZ International Services (IS) representation in NicaraguaThe IS Latin American/Caribbean Team has expanded its presence in Central America with effect as of August 2011. Project manager Katja Kammerer is representing IS in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. Besides its representation in Panama, this means that IS is now represented at two important locations in the Central American region. After Haiti, Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Latin America and the Caribbean. It has been an important partner country for German financial and technical cooperation for decades. The European Union is a particularly important donor organisation in this country, and its delegation services the Central American Region from Managua. Other important donors are the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and the UN. Activity areas in German-Nicaraguan development cooperation are environmental policy and sustainable resource management, drinking water supply and waste water disposal, and strengthening structures in the rule of law and promoting decentralisation. IS sees considerable potential in the areas of social cohesion, environment and water, renewable energies, infrastructure and tourism, not only in Nicaragua but also in neighbouring countries. |
